HackBoy: Retro Gaming 8Bitdo Zero phone case
Description
A "Gameboy" for the smartphone era. Who needs that RetroPie custom hand-wired portable device project? You've already got everything you need in your pocket! For retro emulator gaming, I always looked for a portrait-mode controller phone case, but no one makes them. So I custom-designed sleeve for my OnePlus 3T phone that snaps in this bluetooth 8Bitdo Zero gamepad. The controller is secured with some tabs and the phone stays in using good 'ol gravity. There are ports on the bottom to allow access to the phone's charge port, speaker, headphone jack, and also the status LED on the 8Bitdo Zero. The gamepad can still be charged through the micro-USB port on the top without removing it from the case. The phone sleeve opening is 77mm x 9mm, which fits my OnePlus 3T in it's plastic case perfectly, but should also fit other devices of a similar size (Samsung, Apple, Google). But measure your phone to be sure. I may consider adding more for more custom fits popular devices if there's enough interest. 8Bitdo Zero is easy to find. It can be bought for about $12 on Ebay, or a little more on Amazon if you want it sooner. Improvements? While pressing the L and R buttons is not too bad as-is, I'd love to somehow put them on the back. Perhaps someone more swole in their Fusion 360 chops could add a lever system that would press the buttons on top of the gamepad. Or you could wire new buttons directly the PCB of the 8Bitdo. I cracked it open and it doesn't look too hard.
