Description

Another go at creating a usable 3d printable hair brush. My daughter broke the last one after using it for quite a while, so it was clearly too flimsy. She also informed me that the flat pins were oriented the wrong way... which they of course were when I actually think about it. Anyway, I have managed to get a better grip of the beast that is FreeCAD since then, so instead of just making the pins a bit thicker I made a new one from scratch. The 'bed' that holds the pins now has a doubly curved surface, with each pin oriented according to the surface normal at that point. This makes it much better looking, much more comfortable to use and much more fun to design. The pin-bed is also a separate part that snaps into the handle, which means that the pins are held securely in place without glue. Apart from looking better, this also makes it possible to replace only the pins when they break. I printed the handle and the pin-bed in PLA with two perimeters and 10% infill and 0.2mm layer height. To make the curved surface smoother I used the layer editing feature in slic3r to print the surface with reduced layer height, but that's of course optional. The pins are a bit thinner at the tips than at the base, so they similarly benefit from printing the top half of the pins with more layers. I printed the pins in ABS with 5 perimeters and 30% infill, but PLA works too. FreeCAD source code included!
