Desicant Filament Cartrage.
Description
Version 1.1 "Desicant Case 6w.stl" is a BIG print-ability upgrade. The added internal ribs nearly eliminate warping so both covers fit right off the printer. "DC6 bb cage.stl" is a cage for the spool bearings. Uses 7 balls, and is way easier to assemble, though can be a bit fragile. "Desicant Case 6w plate.stl" is a full build-plate with all the parts needed to build one desiccant case with side filament output. I recommend printing several output bushings and nuts to get extrusion percentage dialed in before launching this ~14 hour print. Also, I'd like to report that this case is very good at maximizing the life of the desiccant. Have a few of these cartridges that have been operating for 2 years, and the desiccant still has plenty of life left. Doesn't look like I'll have to recharge it any time soon. Finally, I've found that filament prints better after several weeks in this cartridge. It appears that 4A molecular sieve can dry out fresh filament. Version 1.0 "DC6 shaft cone A", "DC6 shaft cone B", "DC6 spool roller" screw together with 8x 6mmOD bearing balls or air-soft pellets on each end to form a printed rolling bearing. When screwing cones "A" and "B" together, add a layer of blue-tape to the threads if they don't have enough friction. Screw the cones together until the roller has the desired backlash and friction. Print 2x "DC6 spool fork" to support the spool shaft over the base. The base consists of one "desicant case 6" and any two of "desicant case cap 6" or "desicant case cap short 6". The short cap will clear bottom exit filament, while the normal caps give more desiccant volume. If the caps don't snap in due to warped prints, heat the end of the case until it gets leathery, snap the cold cap in stretching the case, then let it all cool to set the new shape. A "hot air re-work station" or temperature controlled hot-air gun makes this process easiest. If are storing rigid filaments, you can save on printing time by inserting 4mm OD Teflon bowden tube into the top of the desiccant case and resting the spool on the Teflon. Contains over 1/2 lbs of granular desiccant. All parts drop into a 21cup Rubbermaid LEPUSEMTE469 dry storage container. Only have to drill one hole for filament to feed out of. So 3mm and larger granular desiccants should fit without leaking. The output bushing installs into a 5/16" (8mm) hole and uses 4mmOD teflon bowden tube for filament feed. Extend the tube all the way to the extruder for indirect filament paths or particularly moisture sensative filaments. Should be able to print the parts at 150% for use with 6mmOD bowden tubes. Should fit almost all spools up to 1KG. Will hold up to 225mm OD spools or up to 90mm wide spools and all combinations in between. ID of spool should be >31mm to use the ball bearing spool shaft.
