Penny Cage for Model Train Weight
Description
As a model railroader I often build train cars in HO scale, and often the plastic cars need extra weight to track well. Some common weights like stick on lead tire weights work well, but I like using pennies. I have tons of them, like everyone else, and they cost, well, pennies! The problem is that even when glued together and to the floor of the model they can break loose and rattle around inside the model and throw it off balance if shifted to the side. This cage is designed to hold three stacks of pennies in a frame that can be glued to the floor of the car with your glue of choice. They stack neatly between the supports, and are held in place by the lid that gets glued to the frame and captures the pennies. The frame has tabs on the edges designed to be centered on the car floor and trimmed to match the width, so even if the cage becomes unglued it will stay centered in the model. The photos show a test model high enough to capture just 3 pennies in each stack, but the printable model will allow up to 10 pennies. 10 pennies come out to about 1 ounce of weight. making it fairly easy to add the right amount to your model for NMRA recommended weights of 1 ounce plus 1/2 ounce per inch of length. This cage allows the addition of up to 3 ounces.
