Standardized Universal Tile System for Visually Impaired Students
Description
The Standardized Tactile Integrated Concept Kits (STICK) is a tool to help improve the learning experience of visually impaired students. Attached is a specification sheet and a master tile. The hope is that people will expand upon this project. Points to consider: - Different textures are important. (different textures are very identifiable to visually impaired students.) - Contrast corners in the form of color and texture. Contrast is based on an individual's needs, and could be added post production with something like non-toxic paint. - Braille could be printed upside down. This would make it so the student can turn the tile upside down to easily read it with their finger. (That way the object won't get in way of reading the braille.) - Consider the infill in terms of overall weight of the tile. Some visually impaired students are sensitive to slight weight differences. - Tiles are more effective when they are attached to a key ring. We suggest having different key rings for different activities. - One of things we had to add to our later prototypes was a distinct corner to provide orientation. The tile is oriented like an SD card, with a distinct cut in the upper right corner. The rest of the "corners" are rounded for safety purposes.
