1:53 Scale Saturn V

1:53 Scale Saturn V

Description

This is very much a work in progress. Posted model files are reasonably complete, but may be updated over time. This is a 1:53 scale replica of the Saturn V Apollo 11 mission that landed on the moon on July 20, 1969. This year marks the 50th anniversary and this model is intended to commemorate that event. The model will come in two variants. One is a display only version that is entirely 3D printed. The second is a working high power model rocket that is intended to fly. Many of the pieces are common so it made sense to design both simultaneously, and I will be building both simultaneously. Flying this rocket requires certification, so if you're new to high power rocketry this is not where you should start. There are great low power kits from Estes and Apogee Components that are a better choice. Also, if you're a high power flyer and new to 3D printing this may not be a good choice. I'm doing this on my time scale and getting it built in time may be a challenge so you risk missing the anniversary. Get the LOC kit if that's your goal. If you're just 3D printing a display model though then this is the place to be. Assembly will be pretty straight forward. I'm doing a video series on it here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLIk8AsRj-ngT93m4xjQh8DDna03Bu_HWg The videos and files will be updated as the build progresses. I'm starting from the Launch Escape System (LES) at the top of the rocket and working my way down. BE SURE TO READ THE NOTES FOR IMPORTANT DETAILS!!! 03/30/2019 - Added files for SLA and S-IVB rear transition, as well as optional boilerplates for the S-IVB stage. I'll have a video up shortly to discuss build details. See the notes for details. **SCALE - IMPORTANT!** 04/12/19 - The primary reason for choosing 1:53 scale was the availability of a 7.51” body tube for building the flyable model. Well as it turns out, 7.51” is the internal body diameter, not the outside diameter meaning the scale is off enough to be noticable. If you’re building a display version, continue as before. The pieces will continue to be available in that scale. If you’re building a flying version and haven’t started printing yet, use the 1:52 scale. If you’ve been printing as the models have been released, you have 2 choices. The first is to reprint the pieces you already have in 1:52 scale. Alternatively, you can print the bottom sections in the correct scale and use a modified version of the interstage that is 1:53 on top and 1:52 on bottom. I will be providing both. Pieces are labeled according to their scale. Part names beginning with 52 are in 1:52 scale, and part names beginning with 53 are in 1:53 scale. 5/30/19: Parts added for the S-IVB stage. For early access to newer parts please join my Patreon! 2/1/20 Sorry for the delay. Back on the project after a few life interruptions. SII stage is complete, most of the SIC stage is complete, although the files are currently for the flight version only. Hoping to get more files available soon! 3/29/20 Now includes all files for the SIC. Don't forget to read the notes for a full description! 4/29/2020 Two versions of the fairing for the flight version. One is slotted for through the wall fins. The other is unslotted, allowing you to add slots appropriate for your build. Display versions remain to be completed. 7/2/2020 Updated the LES Tower to correct the strut placement. Updated the SIC engine fairings to sit flat Update 7/9/2020 In the process of updating the struts, and error was discovered in the LES Tower macro that caused the lowest struts to be at the wrong angle. This has been corrected.
