Aster Hobby T3 / 89 7462 Tender modification - Gauge 1 / 1:32

Description

in 1995 Aster Hobby made a beautiful gauge 1 (1:32) live steam model of a German Preusian Railways (K.P.E.V.) T3 / Deutsche Reichsbahn 89 7462 (http://www.southernsteamtrains.com/akpevt3br89.htm) When upgrading this model withRC-control, I found there are only two problems with this model: * 1: The burner slowly heats the depleating stock of alcohol stored in the burner. When running for a while, this WILL result in the ignition of alcohol vapours. The flames damage any electronic and/or plastic components mounted in the cabin. * 2: It is impossible to fit all the components for RC-control in the tiny cabin at a safe distance from the hot boiler and burner. (battery, receiver, 3 servo's (direction, regulator, blower)) To avoid boiling the alcohol stored in the burner reservoir, it is a good idea to separate the alcohol supply from the burner. I made a tank and sump from brass based on these ideas/drawings (http://www.southernsteamtrains.com/manfigs/fig40atankburner.jpg) For the RC-control, I've copied most of the appoach used by others by mounting the servos to the locomotive and locate the RC hardware in the first wagon behind the locomotive. The Deutsche Reichsbahn did fit tenders to some of these locomotives to extent the operating range (i.e. 89 6009, located in the Dresden museum depot). This sparked the idea to create a tender to store the RC-stuff, instead of a utility car. Please note it was my intention to capture the essential features of these tenders. I did NOT create a 100% accurate model! I've based my design on the attached drawing of a 3 axle 12m3 standard German tender. Some adjustments were needed to fit my home-made alcohol tank and sump. Spoked LGB wheels are fitted in 3 mm bearings (ali, banggood, ebay, etc.). I used the buffers published in one of my other designs (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3365284) The front axle is split in 2 sections to provide space in the middle for the alcohol-sump. A roof, extending over the tender, was designed based on the original roof by Aster Hobby. It somewhat hides the externally mounted RC-control-arms from view. To mount the servo's under the steps and buffers, some machining of metal parts was required. Other than this, all additions and modifications to the locomotive are fully reversable. The initial roof was printed in PETG. It looks good and fits fine, but is not realy stable because it does get pretty hot in the cabin. Printing this item in metal would be a perfect solution. A completely new set of STL-files was uploaded 12 May 2021
