Big-Wheel Nerf Quad-Wheel T.E.D. Cage Afterburner
Description
I wanted to design a flywheel cage with more than two flywheels in a single stage. I was given this idea by reddit user Dr_Glaucous in their post: the triwheel theory. This cage is called T.E.D. for "a Total Eclipse of the Dart." This version has much larger diameter wheels for higher RPMs and performance. It utilizes a modular motor mounting plate system and proprietary flywheels. It can take any size motor (130 132 or 180). The flywheels have a complete surround on the dart and there are two crush options, high crush (equivalent to a regular 41.5mm cage in flywheel spacing) and low crush (equivalent to 43mm). The spacing does not work in the way that a regular cage does due to the motor placement. To install the motors, you first must print out four of the rectangular motor mounting plates and screw the four motors in (using regular motor-mounting screws). You then print out four of the flywheels (print at 100% infill with no raft), and install them. The flywheel holes are tricky as different printers will make slightly differently sized holes. There are 0.08, 0.09, and 0.1 inch hole options, find the one that works best for you. I highly recommend using a perfect fit tool or a vice for flywheel installation. Next, simply press the motors into their places (with the mounting plates in their slots) and you're all set. Screw the lid on using regular Nerf toy screws. Torque will not be an issue due to this cage having twice the motors (and half the torque requirements per-motor) of a regular cage. I would recommend 2s or 3s Fangs Re-Vamped or some other high-powered motor. This cage was designed with being an afterburner in mind, hence the barrel attachments. However, there is also a design with no barrel attachments that could be theoretically mounted inside a blaster. I may eventually create a version designed to fit into a Stryfe - shell cutting would be required but it would still fit (this cage is no longer than a regular Stryfe cage, only taller). I also plan to make canted versions and multi stage versions in the future. A build using this cage absolutely needs a MOSFET! Edit 8/23/19: Improvements were made to all of the files for ease of assembly and installation. Please share your makes! Enjoy! -SkidmarkJr
