The Egg - Desktop Notification Assistant | 2nd Place in DesktopFusion Design Challenge!

Description

8-7-2019 \\ I am pleased to announce that I won the runner-up/notable mention slot in the #DesktopFusion design challenge! I am honored and pleasantly surprised to even be recognized in my first design competition. Looking forward to future design challenges! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Egg - #DesktopFusion Design Challenge Submission This is my design for the Desktop Notification Device category for the #Fusion360Challenge. The basic function of the device is to offer basic notifications for calendar, missed calls, messages, etc. Main design points to notice are the under-mesh OLED (not color) screen, desk-lamp functionality, organic design inspiration, and modern finish. However, The Egg offers more advanced functionality for further productivity when desired. - Google Assistant for home automation, further notification interaction, creating events and timers etc - The top of the device functions as a desk lamp - The device contains a Li-Ion battery to allow some wireless use, primarily as a bluetooth speaker - Contains a downward-firing (coned) speaker for 360 degree sound and use as portable speaker - Bluetooth connection for tracking of phone notifications and audio pass-through - USB connector for charging/power - Audio OUT for connecting to larger speaker system The design isn't 100% finished, but I ran out of time as I decided to enter the competition a bit late. Key things I would continue, time permitting: - Internal layout of major components (speaker, main boards, battery, OLED) - Refine mesh or perhaps remove, depending on design aesthetic desired - Improved rendering engine (Keyshot or similar) The renders show some artifacts that I attempted to repair using some post-processing in Photoshop etc. This is primarily due to limitations in the Fusion360 rendering engine, specifically when multiple thin-walled bodies are extremely close together (i.e. the mesh around the main body). You will notice in the Fusion360 design files that at the end of the timeline there is a Scale command. This is to scale the mesh outer surface by a few percent to separate it further from the main Egg body. This is purely for rendering purposes and is not intended as part of the final design. One option for final design may be to remove the mesh around the lower region. The mesh is primarily for aesthetic reasons, but it may be desirable to remove for an even 'cleaner' finish, with easier OLED viewing or touch-screen capabilities. I haven't done much product design, so I greatly enjoyed the few days I was able to work on this project and look forward to hopefully doing more similar projects in the future. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions, comments, or suggestions you may have! I will probably start posting more of my design/engineering work on Instagram, so follow along if interested (or if you like photography): www.instagram.com/engineer_and_camera Note: some supplemental model files used in the renders (pencil, notebook, etc) are not mine but are used within the Creative Commons licensing terms. These were used solely for the renders and are NOT included in the downloadable models. All downloadable files are my own.
