Water Heater Protective Tub (For Aquaponics Sump)

Water Heater Protective Tub (For Aquaponics Sump)

Description

I have an aquaponics system in a greenhouse. Occasionally, the sump tanks will freeze or get excessively cold for my tilapia and freshwater shrimp. If I put a common aquarium heater in the sumps to keep them above freezing, and then the water recedes to leave them uncovered, they will either shatter (glass type) or melt things (metal type). This protective heater tub keeps the heater submerged when the sump temporarily runs dry. The retained water keeps the heater from overheating as long as any remote temperature sensor is also submerged in the tub. The heater then keeps the water from freezing and helps to reduce temperature shock when the pump turns back on. Heater compartment is 14 inches long. To use: - Print two of these - Stick the two halves together with doublesided tape - Bolster and waterproof the joint with hot-melt glue - Put pea gravel into the perimeter compartments to prevent flotation and movement - Lay heater down in tub and zip-tie cables to included eyelets to keep heater in place - Place tub in sump and fill with water. Sump will then keep it full as the tub doesn't float.
