Drill Press Vise Thread Cutting Die Holding Jig

Drill Press Vise Thread Cutting Die Holding Jig

Description

I have a project that requires a number of rods to be threaded that absolutely must be perpendicular to the mounting surface to work properly. There are numerous examples of using a drill press and drill press vise to tap holes, but not so many using the drill press to tap a rod. The drill press table, chuck, and vise serve as repeatable reference planes to hold the parts in alignment. This jig holds the die flat and between the vise jaws so that you can use a rod in the chuck holes to turn the rod you have chucked to be threaded. You will need to move the chuck forward and backward during the threading operation to clear the swarf and not bind. I recommend inserting the die in the same orientation in which you would insert it i your standard die tool, with the screw dimple against the vise jaws. This should prevent deforming the die when you tighten the vise jaws. NOTE: THIS IS MEANT FOR HAND TAPPING ONLY! DO NOT TRY RUNNING THE DRILL PRESS TO DO THIS OPERATION. IF YOU DON'T TRUST YOURSELF NOT TO PUSH THE POWER BUTTON, UNPLUG THE DRILL PRESS. I DISCLAIM ANY LIABILITY IF YOU CHOOSE TO ACT STUPIDLY.
