Modular Flexy Hand 2 (Interchangeable fingers)

Modular Flexy Hand 2 (Interchangeable fingers)

Description

This is a remix of the Flexy Hand 2 that introduces interchangeable fingers to allow the user to customize the appearance of their device. Modifications were made to all finger pieces and the palm so that the fingers can slide off and on without the need to restring the device. All other parts are imported directly from the Flexy Hand 2 Thingiverse page. Two main changes were made to the original design. First, slots were added to each finger piece to allow the strings to slide in and out of the channels as needed. Also, a ball and socket system were implemented to secure the strings in the fingertips in place of the previous method of tying the strings in permanent knots. In addition to these two changes, the palm walls between fingers were shortened to allow the fingers to slide off freely. All other parts are imported directly from the Flexy Hand 2 Thingiverse page. Part of the motivation for making this remix is that customization is already a key aspect of 3D-printed prosthetics, but it is mainly limited to customization in the printing and fabrication stage. This design allows the user to independently swap finger colors to change the appearance of their device as frequently as they like. This is currently a prototype that has not been thoroughly tested. The process of switching fingers is not as streamline as I was hoping and has room for improvement. Also, the modifications currently focus on aesthetics, but this premise could be used for functional attachments in the future. I hope to complete more testing in the future and would appreciate any suggestions on the design. Note: This work was supported in part by NSF under Grant No. (1723744).
