New gears for box joint jig

New gears for box joint jig

Description

This adds a 24-tooth gear to my existing 3D printable bevel gear set at https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2953812 for Matthias Wandel's screw advance box joint jig. The collection I provide now includes 12 and 16 teeth axle gears, and 24 and 32 teeth cranking gears. Cranking_gear + axle_gear = spacing in inches per 1 turn, 2 turns, 3 turns 32 + 16 = 1/8, 1/4, 3/8, ... 24 + 16 = 3/32, 3/16, 9/32, ... 32 + 12 = 1/3, 2/3, 1, .. 24 + 12 = 1/8, 1/4, 3/8, ... Note that that if your 3D printer bed is too small to print the 32-tooth gear, you can just print and use the 24-tooth gear because the 24-12 pairing gives the same results as the 32-16 pairing. I have also updated the rotating crank on my original 32-tooth crank gear with a non-rotating crank because the screw tore itself out of the gear body after about 18 months of use. Hopefully the non-turning fixed crank design will be more durable. Matthias Wandel makes his gears out of plywood, but I find that these plastic gears mesh much more smoothly than the plywood gears I have made given the level of my bandsaw skills. Unfortunately, these gears will not mesh with the other plywood gears I have made. Wandel's box joint plans are available at http://woodgears.ca/box_joint/plans/index.html While you are on his website, be sure to look at his other offerings.
