Sidewinder X1 simple MKS board cooling

Sidewinder X1 simple MKS board cooling

Description

Sidewinder X1 simple board cooling There are some good and highly sophisticated MKS board cooling solutions available. However I designed a very simple one. I had some Sunon 5V 4010 fans remaining from an old project which I liked to use. First tried to use them in seriell but this will not work with Sunon and maybe all on the market fans. They shake a little bit and then no motion. So I wired them in parallel and used a LM2596 DC/DC converter from China, Amazon or anywhere else. This will fit in a lot of these housings: https://www.thingiverse.com/tag:lm2596 I used a very simple one: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3843639 Before you connect the DC/DC converter to the fans measure the output voltage. It will be very hight and you have to adjust it by turning the screw of the potentiometer until output voltage reaches 5 – 5.5V. Unfortunatly there are no 24V versions with 40 x 40 x 10 available from Sunon. If any other brand will produce them check if they will fit to the mount! Before opening the bottom, switch off the main power and unplug the 230V line. You will lose warranty when removing the bottom cover. It is fixed with 6 screws. Carefully remove the bottom and unplug the 24V connection to the bottom fan! It is the only one not glued in with a glue stick. Now coming to the fan-mount. I used PLA for making it. The bottom is 3mm, the fans are 40mm hight. This is the maximum hight between the bottom and the housing of the Sidwinder X1. I mounted them with 3 x 7mm (3mm high) power magnets. Any else magnet will fit if you drill a wider hole but you need a 3mm high type. After printing the mount you maybe have to widen the opening for the magnets with a 7mm drill. Since the magnets I used are 7.1mm they hold very good within the holes with no glue necessary. The bottom of the sidewinder is made of steal. The housing is made of aluminium. If you will use screws for mounting just place 2-3 borehols and use a countersink and use countersunk flat head screws. The 3 fans fit tight in the mount. Maybe you do not need M4 screws for fixing them but if so, one for each fan is enough. Place the cooling board between the main fan and the MKS board, mount the LM2569 anywhere and connect it to the fans and the power supply 24V. Then plug in the main fan in the MKS board again. Now carefully close the bottom and check that no cable hits the fans, especially not the main-fan. What direction should the fans blow? I prefered to let them blow against the heat-sinks of the motor driver. I left the main-fan blowing outside. But may it´s also a solution to let the fans blow to the main-fan or to turn the main-fan so he blows into the housing… If you have the magnetic solution it will be easy to change. Maybe it is also a good idea to cover the air intake on the display side if you have a version 4 of the sidewinder. I see no need for this opening.
