2520 Pin Box

2520 Pin Box

Description

The 2520 Pin Box is an original puzzle box that I created for my father. It's fairly simple, but my family enjoyed solving it over Thanksgiving Holiday. --- SPOILERS BELOW --- To build this box you will need 5 springs with a 9mm (3/8") diameter and 16mm (5/8") long. You will also need a 5mm (1/5") dowel rod that is ~250mm (10") long (I used a pair of chopsticks from takeaway). Some hints: 1. Print all of the parts. Note the "box-wall" needs to be printed twice, where one is mirrored. 2. Gently clean all of the dovetails, but make sure to not take off too much material. 3. Clean out the channels inside the bible to make them very smooth. 4. Construct the locking mechanism: a. Put the driver pins into the slots in the bottom of the bible, and put on the caps. b. Slide the dowel down the thin hole in the bible and into the driver pins. c. Cut the dowel off to be even with the top of the bible. Repeat this for all of the driver pins. d. Glue these newly cut dowel rods into the driver pins. e. Remove the caps, insert the springs, and glue the caps in place. 5. Dry build the whole mechanism before gluing it together. --- EXPLAINING 2520 --- There are seven pins, five used to solve the puzzle. Thus there are C(7,5)=21 ways to select the five pins. These then can be sorted 5!=120 ways. Thus there are 21*120=2520 ways to put pins into the bible, only one of which is the correct solution.
