Filament dryer DIY cheap

Filament dryer DIY cheap

Description

Edit: Recently I bought a dryer box which also measures the filament. I don't know how efficient it is in drying the filament but it heats up the top layer of filament and by this it actually per-conditions the filament for printing. I use it during printing, and it works nice. So I guess this topic is already redundant. Recently I started to have problems with PLA filament - the spool starts to print ok, but near the end ~150gr it become very brittle and easily brakes. Once I was slicing next to the printer when the filament broke and pieces fly in the room like shrapnel :) it broke on 2 pieces between extruder and spool ... very unusual ... upon examination I found that the filament is very brittle and easily brakes, no flexability at all! I read here and there ... different theories ... humidity, tension accumulated during extruding, bad quality filament, etc. ... IMHO no one really knows. But important thing is that after placing it in the oven at 50 - 70 degC for some hours it recovers. Also my prints were ok even without drying. So ... here comes the cheapest dryer of all - your printer heated bed and a big bowl to cover the spool. I tried with 70 degC for about 1 hour and it worked well. BTW bonus material - Carla's boot ;)
