Car wash bucket grit guard

Car wash bucket grit guard

Description

I printed this to put in the bottom of my car wash buckets to stop the sponge/mitt etc touching the bottom and picking up grit. I quickly realised I couldn't print the entire part in one piece that would fit on my Prusa MK3, so I printed it in interlocking sections. The 4 parts lock together by friction using three dovetail connections. The overall diameter of the assembled unit is 260mm to suit my buckets and fits snug against the sides. The buckets I use are made by NCI packing here in Australia. http://www.ncipackaging.com/product/20-litre-xlerpail/ There's heaps of car detailing videos on Youtube talking about using the 2 bucket wash method, one bucket with fresh water to flush the sponge out, and a separate bucket for the suds. This helps to remove the grit from your sponge/mitt before dipping it into the suds bucket. This keeps the suds bucket cleaner, and less grit to grind into your paint. The idea of this printed part is to keep your sponge/mitt from touching the grit at the bottom. Especially if you have more than one mitt that you leave in the bucket. I printed this from PETG. It requires no supports if printed in the orientation in the STL (upside down). The standoffs in the middle are 8mm shorter than those around the outside of the bucket due to the bucket I'm using (as pictured) having a raised part in the middle. I've included the SKP sketchup files for if you need to modify it to your needs. I think each section (quadrant) used about 8m of filament, and took about 2h40m. For anyone with an eye for detail, you'll notice one part in my photos is slightly different in 2 places. That was the prototype that I later updated, as per the other three parts.
