LoFat Hero 6 V2 #LFH6
Description
The lightweight Gopro we always wanted, but never got! May 24th 2020 Update: The Space Chicken 95X is now available! Also, A new lens cap design has been added to the collection. April 29th 2020 Update: V2 now available! Now there's glass and no-glass lens module inserts, shaved several grams, and much easier and cleaner rear cover fitment. This design should be final for a while and I'm now turning my attention to TPU pod designs. **What is it?** Start with a Gopro Hero 6. Get rid of the battery, gps, buzzer, microphones, front LCD screen, rear LCD screen, stock heat management, stock impact protection, stock waterproofing, and any hope of ever warrentying it. Then stick a couple of the pieces back in a printed plastic case. Get 100% uncompromised gopro video quality, with all the extra fat trimmed away. And no, it doesn't have hypersmooth. Have you heard of Reelsteady Go? Google it now. Thanks me later! **Why is it?** A factory Gopro Hero 6 is 116g. And many innovative drone cinematographers are now using fully naked Gopro hardware, at under 20g. This re-cased gopro is intended to provide a durable, dependable option for quads 2" to 4", splitting the difference between full-naked and full-fat options. It fits much like a stock Hero 6, being easy to swap between quads as needed. Print the LFH6 front and back components from a rigid material. I've been using ABS. 2. Print the lens insert assembly, and optional ND filter mount, from TPU. 3. Tear apart a Hero 6, following [Rimzler's excellent 17g Gopro guide](https://youtu.be/7hjj_4kj7Nc). 4. Use a heat gun to soften the adhesive holding the lens window glass in it's metal frame, them gently pry it free. Once the rest of the camera is assembled, you will work this window into the groove in the TPU lens assembly. This protects the lens module, but it also serves to lock the TPU assembly into the camera body. 5. The microphones on the button flex strip will interfere with cleanly bending the strip to fit the space available. I suggest just popping the microphones off with a knife. Reelsteady Go will usually discard any audio anyway. 6. The main CPU gets hot. Integrated circuits don't like to be hot. This case is designed to use a low-profile adhesive-backed 14x14mm heatsink. 7. Assembling the camera is a bit of a game of tetris. But you'll figure it out ;) 8. I highly recommend using conformal coating and liquid electrical tape to protect the naked components. Be careful not to get conformal coating in any plug interface. Use liquid electrical tape on the unused LCD ports. If you ever need to attach an LCD to the board to reconfigure the gopro, such as connection settings, you'll be thankful they've been protected. 9. There are several ways to power a naked H6. I wanted to leave my PCB intact, so I'm using the USB pcb module assembly, a tiny ucb-c plug, and a Diatone 5v regulator, running to a 2-pin plug that hangs out the bottom. [Rimzler covers the options here](https://youtu.be/wNfImfcaI3I) 10. Filter mount allows quick-fitting a TBS Jello Guard ND filters to the lens assembly. **Questions that will Probably be Frequent:** * no, it probably won't fit any other gopro version. It's a very snug fit. But feel free to try and let us know how it goes, it would be nice to know if it did actually fit other versions. * yes, if you give me a newer gopro, I'd be happy to design a LoFat case for it. * no, it won't fit in standard quad gopro pods. You'll need to design something or get creative. Please share your designs :) * yes, I'll have some universal pod designs coming along shortly. * yes, I'll make one for ya. For the right price. It's a fair chunk of work, but if you have the dogecoin, I'm happy to build these cameras up.
