Earplugs for Gearheads
Description
This is a remix of https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1671011 "Spark plug" by Broodingcross54 Last year at the NHRA drag races in Washington, I saw some people walking around with ear plugs that looked like spark plugs. I thought that was a fun idea, so I decided to make my own. I took the spark plug model by Broodingcross54 on Thingiverse, scaled it, cut the end off, put a hole on the other end so you can tie them to a string and hang them around your neck, and I added the post to fit the ear plug pods that came off the ear plug band that I'd purchased at the races. The band I bought looks exactly like the "Howard Leight QB2HYG" that I found on Amazon, so if I'm right, the earplug "pods" are item number QB200HYG. I printed them with Overture white PLA, and then painted the non-white parts. I printed mine vertically with the earpod-post facing down. I figured this would look the best cosmetically. This does, unfortunately, put the layer lines perpendicular to the earplug post which weakens the post. I did find that it was strong enough in my case, but layer adhesion is going to be the deciding factor. You could try printing it horizontally, but it will likely take more sanding and whatnot to make it look good after removing the supports. If you decide to print it vertically like I did, you may find you need a brim for adhesion. For supports I used zig-zag "touching build plate only". Layer height 0.2. Note, of course, that the added weight of the spark plug can make these fall out easier, but I managed to make them work. I printed mine with 15% gyroid infill. You could try even less to make them lighter if you want. I'm actually thinking about creating a band that would hold them in place. I'll try wearing them over a longer period of time to see if that is necessary.
