Prusa BOX - Modular, Scalable, Open Source 3D Printer
Description
Here's my remixed I3 design that I've dubbed the Prusa BOX. By using 1" T-slot extrusions and boxing the frame at the front, the Prusa BOX design is much more rigid than a standard I3 and enables easy, convenient transport. The additional extrusion space allows more mounting points for electronics, power supplies and other add-ons, eliminating the need for umbilical-cord style control boxes. This design allows the printer to be safety rotated on it's side or upside down for maintenance/swapping parts, and can print in any orientation for style points. The goal of this design is to provide a guide for those wishing to upgrade their current Prusa/I3 style printer onto a new frame, or scratch build a Prusa BOX. It scales in build volume easily based on the length of extrusions and linear shafting used, and will be better suited to 12"+ build volumes than a standard U frame. I'll provide native CAD files for all the parts and assembly files for the most popular frame sizes, 8x8x8", 8x10x10", 10x12x14", 12x12x12". Most standard I3 hardware will fit this frame, feel free to use your favorite Prusa X axis and extruder system. I'm using the Mk3 style X axis with a slight adjustment to hold precision nuts and my own E3D Volcano MK3 style swapping extruder system. Auto bed leveling using a BL-Touch with this extruder, but any Z axis homing solution is possible. I'll be updating this page with a hardware list, more parts and assembly files as I make them. I'm excited to see the first build :)
