Solar Filter Holder for PowerSeeker 114EQ

Solar Filter Holder for PowerSeeker 114EQ

Description

This is my version of a solar film holder sized for the Celestron PowerSeeker 114EQ telescope. I am using Thousand Oaks Optical silver-black polymer film in a 6"x6" size, which I was able to purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01770FDAC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Thousand Oaks Optical sells these in 12"x12" and 8.5"x11" sheets on their site, or you can find sellers who buy in bulk and sell smaller pieces like I did. The silver-black polymer film is good for up to 100x, which is perfect for this application, and allows me to see the entire perimeter of the sun in my lens with the combination I'm using. If you want to use a higher magnification, above 100x, and really look at sunspots closer, and not just the whole sun, then you need to switch to the Solar Lite product. The main body contains wells for holding #6-32 nuts captive. I have also designed in little divots on each side of the nut to add epoxy after tightening, to prevent the nuts from ever coming out when changing the film. The thickness of the two pieces plus film requires #6-32 screws that are at least 1/2" long for assembly. I added some holes around the perimeter of the collar thinking I would use shock cord and 3M command adhesive hooks mounted to the outside of my tube to ensure it stayed on, but so far the fit is so snug that this hasn't been necessary.
