Maryland TED (Turtle Exclusion Device) for Crabbing
Description
"Crabcakes and football, that's what Maryland does" - Wedding Crashers Terrapins are slowly becoming short in supply, and crabbing doesn't help as these amazing animals can become trapped in crabbing pots and drown. This is where the state-required By-catch Reduction Device (BRD), also known as a Turtle Excluder Device (TED), comes in! This device can be placed on the rectangular funnels to the crab pot and allows for crabs to come and go and turtles to stay out. This device's opening is the required size from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for homes on the water who wish to crab, 1 ¾ x 4 ¾ inch (44.45mm x 120.65mm). While this will keep out most turtles, smaller turtles can still get trapped. Be sure to be checking your trap twice a day! For more information on this device and how to install it, see here: https://tinyurl.com/y3shdscb I used their design as inspiration to create my own as I'm sure these things will break pretty frequently. DON'T FORGET THE ZIP-TIES! It might be a tight fit for your crab pot, so feel free to modify the file to your specific pot! Please save our Terrapins!! Sincerely, A UMD Terp alumnus
