UD-4L Marine Dropship "Cheyenne" From the Aliens movie
Description
This is a model of the marine dropship from the movie "Aliens". I made this for my brother Steve's birthday. Happy birthday, Steve!!! The AFT missile pods unfold using a hinge that has a 3/32" DIA pin. For convenience, I used a straight sections of a metal coat hanger to make the pins. Ship scale: I designed the model to be kind of big for a 3D print, but not too big. The side and top view images in this post has a grid that is marked off in cm. So make sure the dimensions agree with the pictures- don't need to be exact... If you scale it up or down, should be okay, but ensure that the thin areas don't print too thin. Also, you have to change the pin hole diameter, or find a smaller pin, for the missile pod hinges if you change the ship scale different than the dimensions indicated. The FWD missile pods don't hinge. I figure they don't need to, since the missiles can fire in the unfolded config... I didn't model any landing gear which is supposed to be visible in flight. I think it looks better that way. I figure that if you can fly across the galaxy to fight aliens, then the engineers can find a way to design in fully retractable landing gear. There's plenty of interior volume in this boxy design... Exposed l gear would probably melt on re-entry anyways... The APC ramp isn't modeled. I suppose this is a 'flight' configuration of the model. The aft section STL file has custom supports modeled, so there is no need to print supports for the aft section. The supports are for the big horizontal stabilizers. Although auto generated support may work, I wanted a stronger support that also was more efficient with material used. The only other parts that need supports are the AFT missile pod bodies and the mid section. I printed the FWD missile cluster separately from the FWD section to make it easier to paint.
