I3 BMG extruder assembly with inductive probe
Description
This design is the result of an embarrassing story. I designed and built a Diamond hot end. It worked... but I didn't like the quality of the prints, so I had decided to upgrade the hot end of my other printer with (not this design) a direct all metal E3D version. Designed it, built it, and as I was installing it realized it was NOT user friendly. Do not make this: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4386314 So after installing it, I saw some print issues, layer separation. I attributed it to the new design being so far from the X rails (pretty delicate and moved a lot) I searched for a BMG direct hot end design and found a simple one. I modified it for the I3 and Bob's your uncle. Or not... I still had the same separation issue. What I didn't realize is that a pancake Stepper needs a lot less current that a regular (used for the bowden configuration) motor. The pancake motor was very hot... After adjusting the current on the driver... Success! But here is the new design, that is much better than the old one anyway. One screw removes the part cooling fan, and independently, the extruder fan unclips from the cooling fins.It fits in very snugly, Overall I am very happy with the new all metal hot end and carriage. All parts are PLA. I usually use ABS for the extruder cooling parts, but I wanted to try PLA. So far so good.
