DnD Dice Tray- Magnets and Leather Inserts

Description

I've wanted to print 7SoulFox's Dice Tray for so long, but in the process of doing so, I ending up making enough small edits that I felt it warranted uploading. The files are available as both STL or 3mf, based on your preference. I resized the dice tray so that it will just fit in the bed of a Prusa i3Mk3S, about 90% of the original size, and I scaled up the dice compartment lid a few percent so it fit snugly, but not tight. I also extruded 2 mm down in the dice tray section, allowing an insert to be glued there without sticking up noticeably near the top. Finally, I edited the magnet placements and sizes. The sliding tray now has indents in the box and and tray, with the box sized for 8x3mm magnets and the tray sized for 6x3 mm magnets. I used a bigger size for the box on purpose, so that the tray has some wiggle room. As for the dice container, I made it so 6x3mm magnets can fit in each corner without sticking out too far. You will need to sand them down a little bit though in order to get the magnets to fit flush. Lastly, I extruded holes for 2x1mm magnets to fit in the lid. These can't hold much weight, but they do help the lid snap into place nicely. In regards to finishing, I sanded everything down with 80 grit until the lines became almost indistinguishable, and then lightly went over it again with 220. BE CARFEUL. You can NOT use an automatic sander. You want to sand it much more slowly than normal wood, as otherwise the PLA plastic will begin to soften and youll be left with a slick, plasticky surface, which is exactly what you don't want. It will take time, but the results are worth it. After sanding, I applied several coats of Dark Walnut Varathane Classic Penetrating Wood Stain, wiping everything down after 10 minutes and letting it sit 2 hours between coats. Once I was happy with the color, I sealed everything with MINWAX Special Dark Paste Finishing Wax. I like the feel and texture of the paste wax more than standard varnish, but that's just me. Finally, I used some Gorilla Glue to attach the leather inserts, which I placed both in the main tray and in the dice compartment. Overall, I'm very happy with how everything turned out, and if I could do it again, I would recommend using two types of stains to achieve a deeper color to the tray, perhaps some red mahogany. A huge thank you to 7SoulFox for uploading the original files, and happy printing to everyone else!
