OpenBot Post Apocalypse (Mad Max)
Description
Building yourself an OpenBot is cool. Building tank treads for it is cooler. But turning your OpenBot into a post-apocalyptic death machine? That's the coolest. So while I was working on the tank treads - https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4670884 - it became obvious that I was going to have to take this further. The treads give this thing a positively aggressive stance and reminded me of the Bullet Farmer's tracked car from the Fury Road movie. Things kinda spiraled out of control from there. Quickly. I decided early on that I wanted to be able to easily switch back and forth between vanilla OpenBot and OpenBot: Beyond Thunderdome. So like the tank treads I designed, everything can be easily installed/removed without tools, glue, etc. Let's start with a quick overview: there's 5 major parts we're looking at (not counting the tank treads). 1. What I'm calling a "hood ornament" is actually the shifter knob repurposed and set on a mount for the top of the phone mount. 2. The red War Boys "Icon" that mounts to the front of the phone mount. 3. The aggressive brushcutter for the front of the car/tank/robot. 4. The side miniguns. 5. The supercharger battery cover. The hood ornament came from here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:841218 I scaled it way down, put together a press-fit mount that slides over the top of the phone mount and is a decent friction fit (from my printer, at least). This isn't easy to print, and harder to clean the supports out of. I wish you luck. The icon I honestly don't remember where I got it. I was playing around with several I downloaded from Thingiverse and one that I converted to svg from an image. I can't remember which one I ended up using for sure. Glue the "tab" part into the back and again - friction fits into the little slot on the front of the phone mount. The brushcutter is original work. Just a few simple shapes joined up. I stole the curve off the front "bumper" of the OpenBot to make the cross bars. (I suck at anything organic/curved.) If you want to mount it permanently just glue the whole thing together. If, like me, you want to be able to remove it and reinstall it anytime don't glue one side of the middle crossbar. It should friction fit and hold together (no guarantees if you start mowing down wastelanders, though.) Assembly is pretty simple: the side crossbars are 2 pairs of identical, mirrored parts. Glue them into the outer blades (the ones with the larger holes in them). Then glue the top one into the inner blade. I recommend not gluing the bottom one just yet. Put the middle bar in place on one side, so that the lower outer crossbar and it are "sharing" that lower hole evenly (each is stuck halfway in). Glue the lower outer crossbar from the outside of the inner blade, and then very carefully wiggle the middle crossbar out just to make sure it doesn't get glued in by seepage. Do the same thing on the other side, except just glue the middle crossbar in. Then you can install the brushcutter by simply "hooking" the outer blades onto the nubs on the front bumper and friction-fitting the middle crossbar in place. Side miniguns are a bit of a chore. I looked for the model I borrowed parts from and couldn't find it. The original file is called "Chain_Gun_Custom_Print_Ready" so if that's yours let me know and I'll give proper credit. I tried printing that. It wasn't going to work for me. So I chopped all the barrels off and then set holes into the main body. Then I simply crafted some simple disks with matching holes and bought some 2mm steel tubing. Cut myself 12 lengths of tubing and filed the ends flat. Used a heat gun to get the ends hot and pressed them into the body. Then kinda hammered the disks onto the ends of the barrels and slid them down into place. They look fantastic (not counting the little bits of plastic I didn't clean up before I took the pictures above). In fact, using the Dremel to cut them heated and discolored the ends, so it looks more realistic. Then I modified the tread deflectors I made for the tank treads and glued them onto those. Slide on friction fit. (I recommend mirroring the body of one of the guns if having one "upside down" bugs you.) The supercharger. Kind of my favorite part. I got the supercharger body from here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1043515 This magnificently crazy guy built it to put on the hood of a small economy car. I shrunk it down a lot more, and then thickened up the scoop so it would print nicely. I chopped it in half so I could print with good detail and minimal supports, and then cut the pulley off so I could separate it and the belt to print in different colors. (The original model has a bunch of different versions, I started with the one that had the whole thing all one piece - he has individual pieces for printing the big one like he did). There's a shaft down the centerline of the pulley meant to take a piece of filament. This helps make sure the two halves of the body are aligned, and also mounts the pulley/belt on straight. The battery cover is probably something you'll have to modify to use this. It fits my battery holder very nicely, and I drilled two small holes to run the wires down into the body (hence the small notch in one side). I did a layer change at the top so that I could print the "exhaust pipes" in silver. I found them here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1962421 and modified them to work. (Chopped off what I didn't need, filled them in part way to make them stronger, etc.) I also included a version of the battery cover with the pipes coming out the side. I haven't tested that since I wasn't sure if it would clear the tank treads, and I'd have to paint the pipes or the battery cover since a simple filament change wouldn't work for dual colors. Ride Eternal, Shiny & Chrome! If you'd like to tip, fantastic. In addition to the PayPal configured in Thingiverse I also accept crypto.
