It uses common 608 roller bearings (search for 608ZZ or 608RS, I bought 4 for €4) for a smooth rotation of the filament spool. The spool holder is moved back slightly, allowing for larger spools and for the optional roll-off saver. If you don't have any roller bearings you can print and install the rod extenders instead, it will not move as smoothly but should be fine until you can get your hands on some 608's. You can also print and use the optional "Roll-Off Savers", one on each side of the spool, to minimize the risk of filament jumping over the spool, although it's unlikely it will happen with the tall version, even with new spools. Make sure you feed the filament from below the spool through the black filament guide tube. BOM - Bill of Materials 2 x 608ZZ roller bearings 1 x M3 or M4 screw and bolt (15 mm) (optional, you can use the stock screw and nut) What to print Print the following parts: external-spool-holder-top-1.0.stl external-spool-holder-bottom-1.0.stl If you're using very wide inner diameter spools you can print these instead: external-spool-holder-top-wide-1.0.stl external-spool-holder-bottom-wide-1.0.stl Also print these parts: external-rod-holder-left-1.0.stl external-rod-holder-right-1.0.stl external-608-roller-bearing-housing-1.0.stl (print 2 pcs) external-608-roller-bearing-wheel-1.1.stl (print 2 pcs) Optionally, print this part as well: external-optional-roll-off-saver-1.0.stl (print 2 pcs) Also optionally, if you don't have any 608 bearings yet, print these: external-optional-rod-extender-1.0.stl (print 2 pcs) Print Settings Printer: QIDI Tech X-Max Rafts: No Supports: Yes Resolution: 0.2 mm Infill: 20% Filament brand: Fillamentum Filament color: Yellow Filament material: ABS Notes: Most parts will be fine at 15-20% infill. Print all parts except these without supports: external-608-roller-bearing-housing-1.0.stl These need support. Post-Printing After all parts are printed, install them in this order: Install spool holder (named top) over the aluminum rod. It should be a tight fit. If it doesn't fit, sand the inside of the edges slightly until it does. Move it to the middle of the rod. Install the roller bearing housing and push in the roller bearing on both sides of the rod.. Install the spool and secure with the spool holder (named bottom). Drop in the roller bearing wheels. They have a diameter slightly larger than the rod allowing it to rotate freely but with some resistance so the spool doesn't spin too easily. Remove the stock rod holders. They're secured with an allen screw on each side. Drop in the replacement rod holders and secure the screws. You can use the stock allen screws or slightly shorter M3 or M4 screws (15 mm) and bolts. Feed the filament through the guide tube. Done. Tall rod holder with optional roll-off savers. There is no risk of spool tangles happening using this setup, you may not even need the roll-off savers.
