WD-11 Vacuum Tube
Description
This is mock-up Radio Vacuum Tube shell for my 1922 Westinghouse Aeriola Sr radio. Installed in the radio tube mock-up shell is miniature 5676 to fill in for the unobtanium WD-11 vacuum tube. I have a video on the project: https://youtu.be/6qr069e3uTE The Westinghouse Aeriola Sr. was a very early consumer electronics product meant for the more general public. For all practical purposes it was the start of low cost consumer electronics. It was a one tube radio so it could only be used with a set of headphones, unless a accessory amplifier was used. The early radios were all battery powered and required multiple batteries at deferent voltages to work. The biggest problem with the very early radios was the short life of the vacuum tubes. In this case the tube used was a very early design that went out of production very early so there are for all practical purpose none to be had at a reasonable cost. If they can be had then they are just too precious to even use anyways. So a good bit of this radio project is going about making a substitute tube using a miniature 5675 vacuum tube that needs some tweaking resistor to make work more closely to the original WD-11. The 3D print files, there's 2 versions one that uses a copper tube for the shell, its 1" x 2.25" and is painted to look like a tube. The other version is simply a 3D printed shell and is much simpler. I had thought the heat from the mini 5676 tube would be too hot but it really is not a problem.
