Oldenburg House and Merit Order - Knight's Cross 2nd Class with Crown
Description
This order was founded on November 27, 1838 by Paul Friedrich August and was intended to commemorate the 25th anniversary of his father's return. The order initially consisted of the following classes: Grand Cross, Grand Commander, Commander and minor cross (from 1860 knight crosses). Attached to the order was the general badge of honor in 3 classes: gold, silver and iron. The grand crosses were divided into crosses with gold and silver crowns in 1841. In 1856 this award for merit in war was expanded to include 2 swords going through the middle. At a higher award in peacetime, these were added to the ring. A gold crown was donated as a general honorary badge, 1st class. In 1883, the General Decoration of Honor was renamed the Cross of Honor. In 1903 the officer's cross was donated between the Komtur and the Knight's Cross 1. Class stands. The knight crosses 2nd class were divided in 1906. It was now possible to award knight's crosses 2nd class without a crown. The last expansion was the Foundation of Laurel for Crosses with Swords in 1918. Meaning of the dates on the arms of the cross: January 17, 1755 - birthday of Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwigs, July 6, 1785 - accession to government, May 21, 1829 - anniversary of the Duke's death, November 27, 1838 - foundation of the order Silver cross with white enamelled cross arms and silver edges.
