SpeedDrive for Dual Gear Extruders or Longer Extruder

SpeedDrive for Dual Gear Extruders or Longer Extruder

Description

This is a remix of the SpeedDrive v1 direct drive mount, customized specifically for Winsinn and other dual gear extruders (the v2 mount), and also a version of the mount for generic thinner extruders. like Longer LK1, LK4 and LK5 (the v1 mount). I have also designed a direct drive side mount, with motor and extruder rotated 90 degrees from this one. Some may prefer that orientation, as it generally eliminates the x axis reduction caused by this one with 4040 sized extruder motors. 4023 extruder motors do not have that issue on either design. Some extruder stepper motors, like the 4023 pancake motor I use, can run extremely hot if vref output is not carefully calibrated at the stepstick pot (or in firmware settings for TMC2209 steppe drivers). I present, this excessive heat can bleed through the mount and into the extruder frame, causing mount softening as well as undesirable pre-melt of the filament as it goes through the extruder, leading to jams. To address this issue, I recently added the v3 mount, should you need it. The v3 mount is the same as the v2, and is also intended for dual gear extruders, except that it has 2mm standoffs between the stepper motor and the mount and and air vents in the mount frame. However, since your current mounting bolts may not be long enough due to the 2mm standoffs, using this mount should be a last resort, after you have adjusted vref output on the stepstick, and then only if the motor continues to run hotter than you are comfortable with. These three direct drive mounts should all work for the same list of printers described on the original Speeddrive Thing, plus Longer printers, which require more X axis clearance than most, especially when their stock extruder motor is used. This kit also includes a generic filament out sensor bracket and a special custom filament housing for Longer printers, LK1, LK4 and LK5, for their stock filament out sensor. Mix & match as needed. Winsinn and all other dual gear extruders require a significant inset and an offset because of their base dimensions and filament in and out location. These mounts are simplified somewhat from the original to reduce need for supports, and to minimize impact to X axis build platform loss on left side. If X axis loss is an issue for your printer, as it was for me, consider replacing your extruder stepper motor with a 4023 pancake stepper motor, as I did. There are two optional filament out sensor configurations, which is generally going to be needed for any direct drive setup. The "Universal" platform by itself should work with most of the replacement filament out sensors sold on Amazon and elsewhere. It incorporates a cable bundle strain relief attach point for a small zip tie. If you are installing this kit on a Longer printer with the original Longer filament out sensor and board, you will also need the Longer Sensor Housing part, which mounts to the universal platform with 2 x M3x10mm self tapping screws, and receives the Longer stock sensor board. Regardless of extruder or filament sensor selected, You will probably also need the end stop part, unless you replace your extruder stepper motor with a Nema17 4023 type, available on Amazon for about US$10. FYI: The fan duct I am using and is in the pic is here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4816245. Updates: 2021-05-04: Added the "Universal" filament sensor platform. 2021-05-08: Updated Universal filament sensor platform with stronger attachment arm, and replaced original Longer 2-part platform and housing with an improved filament sensor housing that mounts directly to the Universal platform. Updated post-printing assembly instructions for new filament sensor platform and housing. 2021-05-10: Added base for Longer printers that supports al Longer stock parts, including extruder, extruder stepper motor, and one of the optional filament out sensor mounts. 2021-06-01: Added the v3 mount base for situations where a stepper motor runs very hot and needs additional ventilation. Renamed some files to better identify them. Updated comments for addition and renamed files. 2021-06-02: Updated v3 mount to reduce need for longer screws, even with standoffs.
