Jade Chess Set
Description
#**TL;DR:** This is a chess set scanned from a set my grandfather found at an auction, which was a commercial cast (allegedly) from an actual jade chess set. The print is super stable and only requires supports in some obvious spots, like the bottom of the pawns' robes, the horse's overhanging hoof on the knight, the king's spear, etc. The set in the pictures was printed at 140% scale, the files are the scale of the original pieces. Happy printing and happy playing! #**THE STORY:** My grandfather knows that I work at a public library MakerSpace, and sent me this beat-up, injection-molded chess set that he found at an auction in Reading, PA. The box was broken, the board was torn, and some of the pieces were broken, but hey, he got it for $3 and shipped it to me to mess around with. Per the box, it was a cast of an actual, existing chess set, but I haven't been able to verify that. It also didn't have the brand on it, the pieces only came in the bottom half of the box. I was able to find at least one of each piece that wasn't completely broken, plugged the molded bottoms with play-doh, and got a good scan of each using our EinScan-SP. From there, I sculpted out aberrations from the scans and sculpted back in worn noses, dings in the circular bases, etc. in Meshmixer. I also added a conical cavity in the bottom, so these are able to be weighted and felted, if that's your thing. This project has been a year in the making, and I think the set turned out great. #**THE SPECS:** These pieces were printed between a bq Witbox slicing from S3D at 0.1mm and two Prusa MINIs using PrusaSlicer's variable layer height set to Adaptive. I printed my set at 140% scale, because I teach chess to kids and teens at the library, and we like playing with big, chunky pieces. All the details come out at original scale just fine, I test printed the queen at 100% to make sure. #**SUPPORTS:** For the most part, the models are super conducive to printing, there are only a few spots that require support: **KING** - Bottom of spear **QUEEN** - Overhangs on sides of robes **BISHOP** - Elbows **KNIGHT** - Hoof and tail of horse, bottom of spear, maybe back of head **ROOK** - None **PAWN** - Bottom of robes and elbows I only painted on or enforced those areas, and the models came out perfect. #**FILAMENT** To preserve the jade aesthetic, I used Prusament in Mystic Green and Vanilla White for my set. Happy printing, folks! If anyone's got any feedback on the models, or can track down the original jade set this is from, they're more than welcome!
