Description
Designed this model of a mass driver/catcher all in one machine. A mass driver launches objects using electromagnetic propulsion, while a mass catcher is a theoretical device envisioned to decelerate a mass of material, usually in the context of outer space transport, in order to construct mega structures in space. Real, functional, mass catchers used in space would likely be in a relatively stationary positions held in Lagrangian points of space in our solar system. The funnel-like structure would have a massive kevlar sheet (100m in diameter or more) to act as a 'mitt', for catching material launched from mass accelerators on the moon or from other mass drivers. The machine would also have retrograde rockets to provide thrust in the opposite direction in order to slow the material once caught, and a giant coiled spring surrounding the structure, would allow some of the force to be absorbed. This coil, could in turn be powered to form a magnetic field around the hollow tube that it surrounds (forming the mass driver part) which could be used to then launch material into desired locations.
