Stronger Me / mBot LED Matrix Plate Cover Replacement - 3D print or laser cut
Description
The mBot is a great robot, but the LED matrix cover is a terrible design with several weaknesses in the brittle acrylic and we've had two snap already. If you want to, you can use washers to space it a little away from the metal robot base and this allows you to have the LED matrix a little lower and have the connector on the back slightly less crushed by the mBot electronics case. Really the motherboard spacers need to be a couple of mm longer to stop this altogether (or spaced with thick washers). I attach the ultrasonic sensors to the top of the plate with simple m4 nuts and bolts. I took the original amazing design by pictux and made quite a few different versions. His was 3mm thick instead of the 2mm the original acrylic was, so I've got 3mm and 2mm versions of all the designs. I wanted to make it stronger where the plastic clips join it to the LED matrix so I extended it out to the sides more. I also didn't like the sharp corners, so I rounded them. Many people will want to laser cut this for speed/convenience and so I've included DXF and DWG files of them too. When printing, I deliberately modified the shell and infill pattern in Cura to be [0,90] instead of [45,135] so that it diffused the light in a way that matched the LED layout better. I used 100% infill for strength and clearer light transmission. Checkout my make for lots of photos. Unfortunately, the LEDs seem to pulse at the same rate as my phone camera so the photos aren't always great. I've got photos of both the 2mm and 3mm version, but I prefer the 2mm.
