Description

This is a working composite of Galileo's two known original telescopes at the [Museo Galileo](https://www.museogalileo.it/it/) in Florence. - 2427 - w/ 51mm objective w/1273mm fl, 25mm eyepiece w/ -94mm fl - ~14x magnification - 2428 - w/ 37mm objective w/980mm fl, 22mm eyepiece w/ -47.5mm fl -. ~20x magnification The goal is to create an easily 3D printed "Galilean" telescope, faithful to Galileo's work without being a museum replica, with improvements to allow it to easily use modern telescope mounts, compare performance to Kepler's optical improvements as well as modern telescopes and allow extensions to use cameras and Galileo's heliograph method of observing the Sun. It uses a 50.8mm 1000mm focal length planoconvex objective and a 25.4mm -50mm fl planoconcave eyepiece. This is a mixture of the original Galilean telescopes - preserving the light gathering power of the 50mm objective with the greater magnification of the later, more compact telescope. Both telescopes were largely constructed of wood - wood impregnated PLA is recommended here. It is believed that Galileo made most of his observations with the 20x telescope. I am using these lenses: [Objective](https://www.thorlabs.com/thorproduct.cfm?partnumber=LA1779) [Eyepiece](https://www.thorlabs.com/thorproduct.cfm?partnumber=LC1715) I have made some improvements to this model that 3D printing enables: - the body tube is modular both for ease of printing but also to allow experimenting with optical systems with differing focal lengths. Sections screw together. - incorporated a Vixen mount so the telescope can be mounted on a modern telescope mount for ease of pointing (compensating for the telescope's very narrow field of view) - the mount also incorporates a 1/4-20 standard camera mount - optional dual-Vixen adapter so it can be mounted in parallel with another telescope to do a real-time A/B comparison - incorporated a modular eyepiece that allows an upgrade to Kepler's improvement using a planoconvex eyepiece to improve field of view - incorporated a modular eyepiece that allows addition of a iPhone 11 camera. - incorporated a modular eyepiece that allows addition of heliograph to view the Sun. I suggest printing in a wood impregnated PLA filament. Both the eyepiece and objective holders have one O-ring printed in TPU filament.
