Schumacher Top Cat Non-Breakaway Wing Buttons
Description
Wing button mounts for the Schumacher Top Cat and Cougar. The original Schumacher Top Cat wing mounts use O-rings to connect the wing to the mount bracket. The general intent is to provide both a quick attach type feature / break away in the event of a significant crash. In theory, this is a clever idea and potentially saves the wing from significant damage. In practice, however, this is not the most robust design. It retains the wing and accomplishes the quick attachment feature, but threading the o-ring through the wing button is not the easiest task and is time consuming. I would have hated doing this back in the 80's while racing this car (which is probably why this was revised in later generations). Additionally, the supplied o-ring material would experience ozone cracking frequently - which would lead to premature failure (especially a problem with the re-release kits). And while running without the wing would seem OK, it does provide downforce which does help keep the rear planted. This button setup is designed to clasp the lower mount to prevent rotation, and then has a loose upper button that passes through the wing. A M3x6 or M3x8 screw is required to screw into the lower mount. Posi-drive 4-40 screws may work but you may have to tune the lower button hole size for appropriate thread engagement. This should be sufficient to retain most wings and still allow you to switch back to the o-ring style if you want the true replica version. In reality, if you take a good hit with a PLA or PETG, it's probably going to break - so you're going to get similar functionality (potentially you'd lose a screw). Tap the lower mount prior to threading in to make it easier to install (M3 tap).
