Ender 3 X-Axis Extension For 315x235mm Build Plate
Description
This project was created to extend the Ender 3 X axis length, allowing to increase the build plate size to 315mm x 235mm. You will need: >-Two sections of 2020 V-slot profile. One with 425mm for the X axis gantry. Other with 410mm for the frame top. >-The RH and LH extension blocks. >-DIN912 M5 or equivalent bolts. >---4x 20mm length >---4x 16mm >---6x 45mm >---8x 50mm >---2x 10mm >---(OPTIONAL) 4x M4 x 20mm button head bolts and 4 spring washers for the X carriage profile, if you wish to thread trough the whole profile, as i did. The rightmost one shall be filed down if it interferes with the belt tensioner. >-M5 V-slot nuts 24x >-An aluminium plate with 315x235mm with about 2mm thickness. >-A new glass for the bed . >-To modify the firmware for the new bed size. At Configuration.h modify the field #define X_BED_SIZE from 235 to 315 >-New and longer X axis belt. You will need to transfer the holes from the heated bed to the aluminium plate. The original heated bed needs to be centred with the new aluminium base. Those holes will than be countersunk to fit the bed bolts. The new 2020 profiles must be drilled from the original ender 3 profiles. Just have to align each end to transfer the holes. For the X axis carriage profile you will need to tap four m4 threads. Will have to counterbore (open cavities) for the two bolt heads of the Z axis gantry wheels and for the four bolts of the frame top 2020 profile. I used a tree shaped radius burr. The two extension blocks must be printed with adequate filament since the Z axis stepper heats significantly during operation. I printed the parts with ASA filament, 0.8 nozzle diameter, 0.5 layer height and 3 perimeters. Doesn't need any supports. If your printer has a dual Z axis with a single stepper motor, as mine has, you will need new belt with about 800 mm of perimeter. It is recommended to install a dual z axis for this project. **Update 21/Set/2021** -Corrected file nomenclature. -Added RH Extension under the name " 4040 - Extension RH Z stepper " with clearance for a stepper motor for those intending to use a second stepper motor for a dual Z axis configuration instead of a belt driven kit.
