Black Foam Box Generator for Diode Laser
Description
This is an Openscad program that generates SVGs that then drive Laser Cutters. This is designed to work with black foam board which cuts quickly and easily on low power diode lasers. The design of the box is such that the lid is made of 5 sides and it rests on a bottom much like a butter dish. The lid fits together with finger joints which will be loose owing to the kerf of the laser cuts. I apply wood glue to the fingers and glue it together. The bottom is two pieces that are glued one on top of the other. The smaller rectangle forms a friction fit inside the lid of the box. If you work with other materials such as MDF, you will need to adjust the "foam_thickness" to match your material thickness and you may want to adjust the "proud" from 1.1 to something more like 1.5 so that the joint fingers will stick out so that they can be sanded flush. If you work with black foam, leave the settings as they are. The dimensions you enter are those of the closed interior of the box. This generator was conceived as a classroom project. The idea is to have a student measure the dimensions of a candybar and enter those in. The student would also enter the candybar name into the text field. If everything goes right, a box will be designed that will hold the candybar. This builds skills such as measuring the dimensions of irregular objects, using the metric system and gives insights into parametric design.
