GR Yaris armrest hack

GR Yaris armrest hack

Description

This remix uses modified sections of MagnusT's GR Yaris armrest combined with a part from the following item on Aliexpress: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003102509403.html?spm=a2g0s.12269583.0.0.4a585fe1A2Ql2n The supplied mount for the above item does fit the AU model Yaris, but it places the armrest too high and it gets in the way of gear changes. It also restricts access to the front cup holder. Despite stories of shocking Aliexpress quality, I was quite impressed with the quality of the lid section and is a good match to the factory seats. The leather pad is also comfortable and not cheap-looking. I used MagnusT's base and a modified section of his "20mm lower" middle riser (STL provided on this page) to make it 50mm lower that the original. When fitted, this height makes the armrest low enough not to get in the way of gear changes, but high enough to be comfortable. The whole unit is also completely removable if you so desire, and requires no cutting of seat fabric like the well-known Swedish armrest. It also has a lot more storage capacity. The Aliexpress armrest can be ordered with different coloured stitching to match your interior. I chose the non-USB version with grey stitching for my standard GR Yaris. The lid of the armrest can be slid forwards but I wanted mine to be fixed, so I glued it. Similarly, the whole box section can also be slid back and forth on a rail underneath if you use a secondary part included in the Aliexpress package. Again, I wanted mine to be fixed so I used a long hacksaw blade to slice the rails off the bottom of the box section and discarded the secondary part mentioned previously. This gave me a flat surface allowing a more stable mount to MagnusT's parts. I used six flat-headed metal screws to fix the box section and printed parts together. You will need to glue the base and the mid section together, however. You will see in the photos that I have also mounted the box section back a fair bit. This allows unrestricted access to the front cup holder. It does not affect the rigidity, providing you use 6 screws of course. I wrapped the cup holder and storage tray mounts of the bottom section with rings of black electrical tape to make the whole unit fit nice and tight in their corresponding holes. You could achieve a similar effect if you were to wrap the printed parts in fake leather or such. Finally, I used self adhesive felt from Bunnings to line the box interior to prevent things rattling about inside. All up, this project cost me approx AU$70 and I am very pleased with the results. Print settings: Polymaker PolyTerra charcoal black filament (a good satin black match for the Yaris plastics) No supports 20% infill 210 degrees with a 50 degree bed temp. Credit and big thanks to MagnusT for his designs! :)
