Magnetic clutch filament spool holder and filament guide

Magnetic clutch filament spool holder and filament guide

Description

A few years ago when I set up my MP Maker Select Pro Ultimate (clone of Wanhao Duplicator 6), I found the provided spool holder to be less than satisfactory. Many spools were too wide, and it either seemed to unroll too easily, or get snagged and cause prints to fail. I came up with this magnetic "clutch" spool holder and filament guide that has worked very well for me so far. I need to make some adapters so it is more 'universal' for different spool sizes - so far it's great for Overture and Eryone spools; if you want it to work with more spools you'll need to enlarge the rotary spool adapters to a diameter of 70 mm or so. I've included some cutaways from Fusion 360, as well as photos and the STEP for modding. See Post-Printing section for non-printed parts and assembly instructions. Note that by the nature of the design, the spool 'steps' from one attracted set of magnets to the next. On occasion, a nearly-full spool is heavy enough such that it can get up momentum to skip several 'steps' at once, thereby over-loosening the filament. Very rarely this loose filament will slip over the edge of the spool and tangle on the threaded rod. As noted in the instructions, you can tune the 'stickiness' of the clutch by adding or removing magnets in the outer hub on the axle arm - currently I have 4, maybe I need 5-6. This will all depend on how strong your magnets are.
