Good Hank's universal wristwatch movement holder vise

Good Hank's universal wristwatch movement holder vise

Description

On a lark i decided to see if i could design a printable version of my favorite movement vise, which has four sides, and two movement sizes per side. At least the larger sizes on each side are slightly undercut and i find that this helps grip the main plate better. I haven't tested all of the sizes but they are each roughly dimensioned to hold many popular wristwatch movement sizes, up to about 13"'. Non-printable parts include two 4mm smooth rods each about 35mm long. They can be any material you like as long as they are smooth. I used carbon fiber because i have 4mm carbon fiber rods left over from another project. You will also need an M5 nut and an M5x40 thumbscrew or M5x40 hex head bolt plus a 3d printed thumb head for said bolt. And a spring. The spring i am using came from a spring assortment i purchased from Harbor Freight Tools. The legend on the inside of the box says 23/64 by 1-3/8. Or roughly 9mm OD 35mm length. Similar sets are sold by many vendors, probably worldwide. A spring isn't necessary but does make it nicer. https://www.harborfreight.com/200-piece-assorted-spring-set-67562.html The smooth rods should fit tight into side A and should slide freely through side B. You may need to gently enlarge holes after printing to achieve this goal. You might want a dot of glue on the nut in part B just to keep it from falling out. I don't know much about the original vintage tool. The thumb screw is stamped "GERMANY" and aside from that the only marking is "GH" engraved on a corner on both sides. I presume that this means that it belongs to Good Hank from King of the Hill. All of my prototypes were printed FDM but i don't see why a resin version wouldn't also work. On FDM printers it prints with no supports and works fine at 0.2mm layer height with PLA here. I had some difficulty with PETG prototypes but that could be down to the quality of my PETG and how much moisture it has absorbed. Have fun, remember to relax, and let me know if you desire some enhancements to this design. 3/9/2020 added an M5 knob because i didn't like any of the ones i found on thingiverse for this job. Prints without support if you have halfway ok part cooling.
