Rotating Headphone Hook/Holder/Hanger
Description
I couldn't find a printable rotating headphone hook to go under my son's desk, so I made one. He's both a teenager and fidget-prone, so I tried to make it as robust as possible without being too clunky. It works surprisingly well and seems very sturdy, so I figured I would put it out there for others to try. Constructive criticism would be appreciated -- I'm trying to get better at this sort of thing. Print with at least 3 top and bottom layers and 3 perimeters to ensure that the pressure from the BB's and washers doesn't crack the surface. I wanted maximum strength, so I used 4 top and bottom layers, 4 perimeters, and 50% infill (cubic subdivision infill type). It feels pretty indestructible. Turn on standard supports when printing both pieces. This will result in a very small column of support under the recessed screw holes on each piece, ensuring better contact with the washers. It only uses a tiny amount of plastic, and it reduces the "crunch distance" at those surfaces, which should reduce the extent to which the joint loosens up over time. You will need a few additional parts for assembly, but some are optional. The full (and highly recommended) version uses 6mm airsoft BB's as ball bearings to reduce friction and improve longevity, but if you don't have any airsoft enthusiasts in the house you can omit them and the design should still function for awhile. Mandatory Parts: 1 x M4 machine screw at least 40mm long 1 x M4 nut 2 x M4 washer 1 drop of locktite, superglue, or similar to lock the nut in place 120mm of 1-inch-wide heavy-duty double-sided mounting tape (or equivalent, or a drill and screws) Optional but Highly Reccomended Parts: 14 x 6mm airsoft BB's to act as ball bearings 1 x M4 spring washer to maintain some pressure between the two halves as the plastic wears over time Print one of each part (one base and one arm). Insert the M4 screw into the base along with one washer. If you're using the 6mm airsoft BB's, place all 14 of them into the circular groove on the top surface of the base. Now slide the arm piece onto the bolt as well, with the BB's sandwiched in between the two halves. Fasten everything together TIGHTLY with the second M4 washer, the spring washer (optional but recommended), and the M4 nut. If anything wiggles or moves when you put pressure on the end of the arm, tighten the nut even further. Finally, put a drop or two of loctite or superglue on the nut to keep it from unscrewing itself as you rotate the arm. The design is meant to be double-side-taped to the underside of a desk, but if you would rather use screws it should be fine to just drill some small mounting holes into the base.
