RC Saliboat nose bumper - Seawind and others

RC Saliboat nose bumper - Seawind and others

Description

I don't have a Seawind, but the others guys I with sail with do. They have sharp hard noses that can cause trouble, so I designed and printed nose bumpers for them, because the boat I save may be my own! Pretty simple print, but the key is in slicing the model for the correct amount of give. I used Ninjaflex (TPU filament), it is nice and soft and stays on well. I tried Semiflex as well, but it was a bit too stiff, but could be worked with if it was all you had. To slice this for my preferred give in Ninjaflex, use these settings. 0.40mm nozzle, 0.20mm layers .40mm line width 3 walls 0% infill 2 top layers, 7 bottom layers This print has thin walls, so these setting make a solid print, but creates a small air pocket at the tip. This pocket has enough squish to give from light hits, but will squish flat on a hard hit, making the impact area very large and soft. I tested these by letting the guys chase me around and slam into my boat from every direction for 15-20 minutes, including some hard "T-bones" with NO issues. I think they enjoyed this testing a quite a bit more than they should have! I used Dritz beading cord elastic 11340W (from the sewing dept.) and Eagle Claw Dual Lock Snaps SDLSNP-1 (from the fishing dept.) to attach it to the jib clip or eye. Tie a knot in one end, superglue it, then thread it down through the hole in the bumper, At about 2.5 inches, tie ont he snap. You are done! It should be snug, but not super tight. It will keep it on for sailing, but allow it to be popped off or fully removed in seconds and there is little weight to it. The pictures show the bumper with a letter P on the top, which I did as a custom touch for my friends, but the included STL models are plain. This may fit other boats as well, I have not tried it, but it fits a Seawind perfectly. There is a regular version and taller version.
