Filament Diameter Indicator Guide sensor measurement dial gauge digital

Filament Diameter Indicator Guide sensor measurement dial gauge digital

Description

This is a guide for a commercial thickness measurement tool. The hand held tool is designed to measure the thickness of sheets, thread, filament, etc. that is moving past you. (Like filament coming out of an extruder, for example.) It has a large bearing on the lower, fixed portion of the tool, and a small bearing on the end of a dial indicator. The filament is clamped between these and a running measurement is obtained. You have to get the filament to run exactly straight over the two bearings, or it simply spits out on one side or the other. With a little practice you can do it, but it makes the tool difficult to use. I 3D printed a small fixture that guides the filament as it flies past and holds it centered on the bearings. Works like a champ. In all likelihood, you could connect the digital dial indication on this tool to an Arduino (or whatever is controlling your DIY extruder) and use this as a feedback sensor for diameter control. I included the Inventor CAD file just in case you wish to modify this in some way. The digital thickness gauge is available on AliExpress for about $60 plus shipping: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/955188460.html?
