18th-19th Century Royal Navy Iron Ballast

18th-19th Century Royal Navy Iron Ballast

Description

Sailing warships required large amounts of ballast to keep their top-heavy vessels from rollling over. Many tons of iron ballast called "pigs" or "kentledge" were placed in layers in the very bottom of the hold to accomplish this. The "Broad Arrow" was cast into this ballast to signify that these are property of the British government. Based on information in the book, Anatomy of the Ship: The Frigate Diana by David White, these .stl files represent the proportions for full-sized ballast and "half pigs" which can be scaled down to match your model. Scaled down to 10%, the print will be suitable for a 1/96 model; 20% will be suitable for a 1/48 scale model. I printed several of these abutted together to fit my model and added chamferred edges so lines would show up denoting single pieces. I'd be very interested to see how you are using this. So please send me a picture of your model if you can.
