Bee-Bot Coding Tiles

Bee-Bot Coding Tiles

Description

I am a kindergarten teacher and this year I won a set of 6 Bee-Bots! I was super excited and loved bringing the bees out for a little lesson enhancement! I was finding it difficult to get the kids to plan their program out before entering it into the Bee-Bot. Originally I was using some paper program cards that the "coder" would lay out so that the "programmer" could tell the Bee-Bot what to do. The cards ended up being a frustration point for the kids and the fun of programing the Bee-Bot was quickly lost. That is why I was so excited to find Shacksandbeans' coding tiles! What a great tactile way to teach kids about block coding! The only issue I had was that the Green Go tile was placed on the left side of the program. I wanted something that would support left to right concepts of print. I also wanted a tile that would remind the kids to clear the bot before adding more twists and turns to an old program. I had a lot of rogue Bees running around my room because the kids forgot to hit the 'X' clear button. I took Shacksandbeans' tiles and put them into Tinkercad so that I could design a RED CLEAR tile that would start on the program on the left hand side. Then I reversed the Green Go tile to cap out the program on the right hand side. Since adding the coding tiles to the activity my kids have been fully engaged. They are enjoying the coding process for the Bee-Bots. Team work has also improved. The kids also have a much more concrete understanding of block coding. Now when we pull out the more advanced robots, like Spheros, they understand how the block coding on the computer is like coding for the Bee-Bots. I hope you can use my tweaks to Shacksandbeans' wonderful tiles.
