5l carboy chicken waterer. more capacity than a mason jar
Description
When you get as many chicks as I do, mason jar waterers are just too small. PET bottles are larger, but highly unstable. I present, the 5L chick waterer. High capacity and stable. I recommend 0.75mm line width, with PETG and 5 top layers. There's no need for supports. installation instructions: 1) make sure your carboy doesnt leak! fill it to the brim, cap it with the original cap, and sit it on a counter(on its side) for a couple hours. if it does leak, you will need to find an O-ring. 38-40mm diameter and 2-3mm thickness works great. 2) screw the cap tightly onto the bottle so it doesnt leak, then add a healthy amount of RTV into the round indent of the printer part. press fit the bottle cap into the printed part, ensuring that the printed part is level with the ground. Leave to set for 10-24 hours depending on the instructions for the RTV you re using. 3) unscrew the printed part together with the bottle cap(they should now be one with each other) and look from the back of the bottle cap, with a lightsource at the back. you should see the 4 holes in the printed part throught the bottle cap. take a drill, and drill out the largest hole (top) and the one oposit it (bottom). the top hole needs to be as large as the printed hole (6mm i believe). this allows air to go in through the top hole, and water to flow out the bottom, preventing it from sucking debris back into the bottle. 4) fill with water and reassemble then test for leaks. if the part is leaking, dry it off completely and coat with pvc glue. if it isnt, congrats! you now have a way to satisfy every thirsty chick that comes your way, no matter how numerous they may be. print using 0.75mm lines layers with 2 perimiters, or 0.5mm lines with 3 perimeters. go slow, with higher temperatures and preferably PETG to ensure a water tight print. please make sure your chicks don't drown! if you have young chicks you can try filling the dish with small pebbles or marbles. I've used it one 3 day old chicks with no issue. they step in, but are able to step out without issue, albeit wet and unhappy. the pictures show a lid, but it wasnt very useful so it've ommited the stl.
