Make Care objects
Description
Sometimes it is the close cases the ones that most attract our attention and with which we can empathize better. This project was inspired by the case of a close friend. / Epidermis Bulosa, also known as the ‘Butterfly disease’ is a non-contagious and uncommon disease characterized by the formation of blisters and wounds on the skin and mucous membranes. In Chile there are currently about 250 people with this disorder, mostly boys and girls. So far it has no cure and the treatment consists of avoiding friction caused by the wounds and treating the blisters with bandages and daily cures, since these are cases of people with extremely delicate skin. For these cares, it is also a disease that is accompanied by a high dependence. ‘Make Care’ was born after having had the opportunity to work with people with Epidermis Bulosa. Together, we detect a series of needs and possibilities. The project had a first stage of ethnographic research. From observation and participation with different groups (first, adults, adolescents and children; secondly, according to the condition of their wounds; and finally, according to how they lived, alone or with more people) an audience was chosen with which to continue the process: adolescents were selected due to the particular situation of overcare by many parents and guardians and due to their desire for independence, especially to carry out certain daily household chores. After analyzing their routines, objects used and the environment, it was possible to define some transversal actions on which they depended on another person and that hindered their personal development. Mainly, they required help to eat and to change their bandages in the mornings and evenings. Therefore, this project involves the redesign of various utensils as scissors, a plate, a glass and also a magnetic adapter that allows greater independence. All these new digitally designed models are available on the Internet to be downloaded and printed in 3D without cost. The project was presented to the Debra Foundation, one of the most recognized centers in Chile and in the world for its work with people with Epidermis Bulosa, to spread this project and designs among the affected community. The project won several awards as “Best of the best” of Chile Diseño at the Biennial of Design in 2017 and the Award for Design of Specialized Products for Industry, Science and Productive Sectors in 2017, among others.
