Description
Destroyers of the Hydra type were a common sight on the outer rim. Small enough to be operated by colonies without significant orbital infrastructure, but powerful enough to deter most pirates or raiders, these destroyers enjoyed long service careers both with the Astro-Heavy Industry Alliance, their partners and affiliates, and an impressively long list of customers and resale operators. The original Hydras were light pulse destroyers protected by a few PDCs. Their performance was adequate in most areas, though though crews complained they were clumsy when docking and seemed underpowered for fine maneuvering, though their main stardrives received no complaints. Variants include the Chimera missile destroyer with its large battery of off-axis missile launchers; the formidable heavy pulse weapons of the Cyclops, the ponderous beam armed Manticore, the Medusa type with its spinal railgun, and the rare Cerberus destroyer with its cruiser class torpedo battery. Finally the demilitarized Kraken merchantmen is included, as many damaged or elderly Hydras were converted to merchant service during and after the mercenary incursions in the outer rim. These are generic starships modeled in roughly 2mm scale (about 1/900 or so). Weapons and drive systems would make them comparable to Expanse or slightly higher technology levels. Starships are armed with a mix of point defense guns, missiles, pulse and beam energy weapons, and of course railguns.
