Woven Slanted Bin
Description
Overview: This is my first attempt at designing and printing the illusion of a woven basket by using alternating and overlapping patterned sweeps in two directions. I was pretty conservative with this design, as can be seen from the solid endplates and relatively thick weave strips. It was a good starting point to test the limits of my printer, especially with the amount of overhangs and bridging involved. In the future, I'll try more complex designs that push the limits of my printer, while hopefully still avoiding supports. I currently store some reusable dishcloths in my basket but it would also work great for small books, napkins, or any other items that fit. The wide base will prevent it from falling over, even if the items you're storing exceed the bin height. Printing: No supports necessary for this print! I printed using Hatchbox Wood PLA on the Prusa i3 MK3 and couldn't be happier with the results. I highly recommend using wood PLA to make it appear even more realistic and aesthetically appealing. Also, if it is your first time printing with wood PLA, I recommend slowing down the print speed of the first layer to make sure you have a solid foundation for the rest of the print. I've also found that lowering the nozzle temperature 10-15 degrees Celsius will help yield the best results, which the manufacturer will recommend doing as well. I printed with a 0.4mm nozzle and 0.25mm layer height, which does make the print take about 16 hours. However, it is a tall print at a little over 13cm so it will take hours to print even if the layer height is increased. The layer height I used was intended to be middle of the road for my nozzle size, so to reduce print time you could either increase the layer height up to the 0.4mm nozzle's limit or use a larger diameter nozzle for an even larger layer height.
