Hydro Garden Countertop Grow Station
Description
This is my DIY version of a popular indoor kitchen hydroponic system. Its great for growing herbs, greens, small vegetables, starting seeds, and propagating plant cuttings. The base can fit a container up to 170 mm by 260 mm. Containers, with lids, this size are available at dollar tree. Another option is food packaging or any kind of small plastic tub. I would recommend you paint the container and lid in a color you like, leaving a strip or window available by which to monitor the water level. In the lid, make an array of holes that are 37 (1.5") in diameter. You can use a hole saw, a spade bit, or even just cut them out with a utility knife. I prefer to keep the holes at least 3" apart, but just do what looks good. The net cup should drop right in. It is sized to accept Rapid Rooter type grow plugs, but you could use rock wool. For the light, I searched for a "Grow light with stand" and found one as pictured. Use a hacksaw to cut off the tripod portion of the light. The support tube should just press fit into the base. Some of the lights are available with timers, otherwise you can use a normal outlet light timer, or a smart plug, and get as fancy as you want with it. Some people recommend a small aquarium pump (water or air) to circulate and oxygenate the water inside, but it will still work well without either if you want to save a few bucks and not deal with the noise. Two versions of the base are included. The one with the cutout will save some material.
